The Monument of the Soviet Army

The Monument of the Soviet Army is a monument located in the Prince Garden in the center of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, dedicated to the Soviet Red Army.

Built in 1954, ten years after the 09th September 1944 coup , today the monument is the subject of heated disputes over its meaning, purpose, and future.

Since 2011, he has been the subject of several actions, most often a protest against the policies of the former Soviet Union and modern Russia.

Thousands of supporters of the left political parties and movements and the blossoming organizations in Bulgaria each year celebrate Victory Day, September 9, 1944, September 23, 1923, and other historical dates by offering wreaths and flowers and organizing solemn concerts and other events at the monument of the Soviet Army in Sofia.
